On Monday, May 12, 2008 a major earthquake, measuring 7.9 on the
Richter scale, rocked southwestern China's Sichuan Province. The
tremors were felt as far as Wuhan, Shanghai and Beijing. Hundreds of
aftershocks followed in the same area. The quake destroyed thousands
buildings, as well as infrastructure like communication networks and
electrical towers.
As of May 23rd, more than 65,000 dead, 23,100 missing, 360,000 injured
and 11.3 million people displaced. Many homes, schools and businesses
were destroyed. This earthquake is the worst natural disaster to hit
China in 30 years.
This silent auction is organized by Phoebe Jin, artist, and Debra
Zhou, gallery coordinator at Centre A, to help the earthquake victims.
The event features a diverse and spectacular group of local and
international artists, with artworks ranging from photos, drawings,
paintings to sculptures. A complete list of artwork can be viewed
online at http://2008may12.blogspot.com after June 15th.
